EFFIGY | Michiyo Fukushima

On The Fringe NYC is pleased to present an exhibition of Watercolor works by Michiyo Fukushima

The artist is of Japanese descent born in New Delhi, India. She enjoyed doodling as a kid, loved art class

in school and showed promise as an artist . By her teenage years the family had moved back to Japan

where her high-school art teacher suggested her taking private lessons and enter the national high-school

student competition. She painted a 51 x 64" canvas with oil paint and she ended up winning the

competition.

She studied photography after high school and was freelance a photographer for magazines in Japan.

While she enjoyed photography, she became more fascinated by a simple concept of how light and

shadow creates beauty. This passion for creation brought her to the United States to find inspiration and

pursue the artistic journey that had started at an early age. New York City was the place she found that

inspired her and was a city she can broaden her life experience and perspective. Everyday life in NYC

was full of stimulation and wonder. The structures, monuments and landmarks were of particular interest,

but also the people. The history, the intense positive energy and the big dreams was a unique but

somehow shared feeling. Of all the movement , action and passions of the city, the artist found that the

history of the city itself remains. Even after all has passed the Effigies depicted on some of the most

famous and endearing architecture of the city , remains to this day. Left as reminders for everyone to

continue and search for that love of creativity and beauty in the world. Now the works created is a

homage to the past and an inspiration for the future of the city and its beauty.
