Press Release “Ghost City” Paintings by Ejay Weiss
NEW YORK – On September 5th, 2020, 11am the exhibition “Ghost City” Paintings by Ejay Weiss (1942-2018) opens at “On The Fringe NYC”, located at 72 Warren Street, NY, NY. The title,“Ghost City” refers to groups of studies with acrylic paint on paper capturing the artist’s post-9/11 impressions of a traumatized city.
Weiss gathered powder and ash from the World Trade Center site following the terrorist attack, mixing it with his paints. Over the next decade he channeled both his pain and his recovery into his art. This culminated a decade later with “9/11 Elegy” -- a series of nine large-scale paintings acquired by the National 9/11 Memorial & Museum in 2018.
The “Ghost City” exhibition presents the artist’s “Resolution Triptych” (2011) where on a monumental scale he painted a gentle layers of bright colors suggesting a sunset, a resolution. This work depicts the 9/11 skyline. A comparison of it to the skyline of today in 2020 allows us to draw our own conclusions.
The exhibition includes three unique, recently-discovered works that also contain ashes from 9/11.
Over the course of Weiss’ career, he developed key bodies of work that became his own visual language of line, texture and tone. The events of September 11th, 2001, and his personal catharsis that would follow, gave Ejay Weiss profound subject matter to express with that language.
“Ghost City” is on view to the public through September 18th, 2020.
